Apple Pie Dessert Pizza

I love all pizza but I particularly love dessert pizza! Unlike many dessert pizzas that are really sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting and fruit on top, this is made with real pizza dough. The crust is then topped with apple pie filling, a crispy crumble and drizzled with a sweet glaze. Enjoy!

Apple Pie Dessert Pizza

Yield: 10 slices
Prep Time: 45 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Additional Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Sweet apple pie filling topped with a brown sugar crumble all on a chewy pizza crust.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoon yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (~115°F)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Topping

  • 1 (21oz) can apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Drizzle

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. To make the crust, in a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast.
  2. Stir in oil and salt. Add the flour 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add flour until dough is smooth and elastic (it will be slightly sticky). You may not need all 3 cups of flour.
  3. Knead with mixer for 5 minutes. Set aside to let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. While the dough is resting, preheat the oven to 425° F. Roll out into a circle and place on a 15" pizza pan; I like to crimp the crust for a nicer look. Bake for 10 minutes.
  5. While the crust is baking, make the crumble topping. Mix the brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, and cinnamon, then cut in the butter until crumbly.
  6. After removing pizza crust from the oven, top with the apple pie filling, sprinkle with strudel topping, and return to the oven for 5 minutes. Allow to cool for 30 minutes.
  7. Combine 1 cup powdered sugar with enough water to make it drizzling consistency.
  8. Drizzle powdered sugar glaze over the top of the pizza. Cut and serve.

Notes

If desired, you can chop the apples in the pie filling, making it a little easier to spread over the pizza crust.

You can use any fruit pie filling (peach, cherry, etc.) to make this dessert pizza. You can also use homemade pie filling rather than store-bought. You will need about 2 1/2 cups of filling.

Storage

I recommend serving this dessert pizza within an hour or two of making it. If you wait much longer than that it does tend to get a bit soggy. It cannot be frozen and thawed either as it will not maintain best quality.

The pizza dough CAN be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge overnight then baked. Pizza dough can also be frozen. Simply allow the rest time, then place in a lightly oiled airtight freezer container and place in the freezer. Pizza dough can be stored for 3-4 months in the freezer. When ready to use, thaw overnight then roll out and bake according to the recipe.

How to Avoid Tough Pizza Crust

If your pizza dough is too tough, it is likely due to adding too much flour. Pizza dough should have a soft, slightly sticky texture. To avoid adding too much flour, make sure to add it slowly and combine well as you add in the flour. Also, be sure to avoid over-kneading your dough as this can also result in tough dough.

If you pull of a piece of your dough it should be stretchy, not pull off in a stiff lump. If you have added too much flour, this can be remedied by gently kneading in a little bit of water until your dough is at the proper texture.
